Insider Tip What the guidebooks don't tell you

Eat lunch at village kafeneions away from the coast. A full meal (mains, salad, bread, water) costs €8–10 versus €25+ at resort restaurants.

When to Visit

The single biggest budget lever: travel in shoulder season. Late May, early June, or September–early October. You get:

  • Flights 40–60% cheaper than August peaks
  • Accommodation at half price
  • Empty beaches and shorter queues
  • Perfect swimming temperatures (24–27°C)

Beaches Are Free

This is Greece. Almost all beaches on Zakynthos are public and free. Even the famous ones.

Free highlights:

  • Navagio (Shipwreck Beach) — boat trip is paid, but worth it
  • Gerakas Turtle Beach — completely free, no sunbeds required
  • Porto Limnionas — rocky coves, no facilities, perfect
  • Xigia Sulfur Beach — free, natural jacuzzi pools

Avoid: Laganas beach strip in peak July/August — €10 per sunbed, €5 for an umbrella. Instead, lay your towel on the sand for free.

Budget Accommodation

Apartments vs Hotels

Self-catering apartments are 30–50% cheaper than hotels of equivalent quality. Look for:

  • Studios in Kalamaki or Argassi (quieter, close to good beaches)
  • Family-run guesthouses in Zakynthos Town (authentic, great value)

Platforms: Booking.com often has the widest selection. Direct booking with the property can save you another 10%.

Budget Picks (Under €50/night in June)

  • Kalamaki area studios: €35–45/night
  • Zakynthos Town B&Bs: €40–50/night

Eating Well for Less

The Kafeneion Rule

Traditional Greek coffee houses (kafeneions) in village squares — Macherado, Agios Nikolaos, Keri — serve honest food at honest prices. You won’t find English menus, but point at what your neighbour is eating.

Market Days

Zakynthos Town hosts a weekly market (usually Tuesday and Saturday mornings). Fresh fruit, vegetables, local honey, and cheese at a fraction of supermarket prices. Stock up for beach picnics.

Supermarkets

Sklavenitis and Lidl have branches in Zakynthos Town. Self-catering saves serious money — Greek olive oil, feta, tomatoes, and good bread are ridiculously cheap here.

What to Order in Restaurants

  • Grilled octopus — €8–12, huge, fresh
  • Moussaka — the Greek classic, €7–9
  • Greek salad — serves 2 easily, €5–7
  • House wine — carafe (500ml) is always cheaper than bottle, €4–6

Getting Around Cheap

Skip the Car Rental

If you’re staying in one area (e.g., Laganas), you can manage with:

  • E-bikes: €15/day, range of 60km — enough for day trips
  • KTEL bus: €1.80 per journey, covers main resort strips

Car Share

Renting a car for 3 days rather than the full week, and timing beach excursions, cuts costs significantly. A €30/day car split three ways is €10 each.

Free Things to Do

  • Walk the Byzantine Kastro above Zakynthos Town (€3 entry, but views are free from outside)
  • Swim at dusk at Kaminia Beach — usually deserted, luminous water
  • Watch the sunset from Bohali — best free view on the island
  • Explore the Natural History Museum in Zakynthos Town (€2)
  • See loggerhead turtles nesting at Gerakas (best at dawn, free)
